The Basics

To create a new formula, highlight the Formula Fields in the Field Explorer and click on the new formula icon as shown:

If you want options e.g. edit, rename,for an existing formula, then highlight the formula and use one of the icons at the top:/>

Alternatively, you can right click on a formula for the same options:

Opening a new Formula, will first prompt you to give it a name, but it will be helpful if you create a structured naming schema as it will be handy, especially when you have many formulas.  It becomes easier, not only to find them, but to use them in formulas.

In this example, taken from a custom report solution, notice the three columns for Dollars_x.  If you named the formulas:‘Budgeted_Dollars’, ‘Current_Dollars’, ‘All_Dollars’, they would be alphabetized in the list, and if there were 40 or 50 formulas, it would be harder to locate them, or remember them when creating other dependent formulas.

Create a new formula with the name 'QQube_Test'

There are three sections, each with pieces that allow you to build a formula in the formula building area:

• Field List - Just like the Field Explorer in the Report Design area where you can drag and dropthe field onto the canvas, you can drag and drop a field into the formula building area (this eliminates spelling errors).
• Functions - The main build blocks to creating formulas
• Operators - '+', '-' '>', etc.

Here is an example of a formula that subtracts one field from another (subtracts PO Open Quantity from the PO Original Quantity):

To check your formula for correct syntax, click on the X-2 icon:

A correct formula syntax will get the following:

An incorrectly constructed formula will prompt a message that 'attempts' to point to the probable cause.  It is not always specific, but the highlighted area will generally give you a clue.
